Amniotic fluid – what does it tell you about your baby’s wellbeing?

This fluid-like substance, known as the amniotic fluid, protects, supports and nourishes your baby(ies) throughout pregnancy and birth. The protective qualities provide you, the midwives and obstetricians with a lot of vital information about the health of the pregnancy and the well-being of your baby(ies).

Generally speaking, the amniotic fluid often referred to as ‘my waters’ is indeed a colourless clear fluid – which is what we naturally expect to see and of course is normal and reassuring.

However, this may not always be the case – sometimes the fluid can look a bit ‘off’, perhaps having a subtle or very noticeable green/brown tinge. This is NOT considered normal and requires an immediate assessment and admission to your local maternity unit.

If the colour is red or resembles anything like a period you must, without any hesitation call your maternity unit for immediate telephone assessment with the knowledge that an ambulance may be the safest and quickest transport to hospital for urgent help.

I always recommend that you save your local maternity unit’s contact numbers [including out-of-hours] on your phone – you just don’t know when it will come in handy!
